Drywall work we do
- New drywall installation. Finished basements, additions, new walls and ceilings. Hung, taped, finished and primed.
- Hole and dent repair. From doorknob holes to large sections, patched with new board where it's needed, not just compound.
- Crack repair. Settlement cracks, stress cracks at corners of doors and windows, and seam cracks, taped and finished so they don't come straight back.
- Water damage. Stained, sagging or soft drywall removed and replaced, with stain-blocking primer so old marks don't bleed through.
- Ceiling repair. Patches, seams and sag repair on ceilings, where the finish has to be flawless because the light hits it from the side.
- Texture matching and texture removal. Blend a repair into an existing texture, or take a textured ceiling back to smooth.
- Skim coating. A thin layer of compound over the whole surface to flatten rough, damaged or heavily patched walls. The Level 5 finish.
Why the repair should disappear
Anyone can fill a hole. The hard part is making the wall look like nothing ever happened. That takes a patch that is actually new board, not a lump of compound; tape that is embedded properly so the seam doesn't crack; compound applied in several thin coats and feathered out wide so there is no bump; sanding that leaves the patch flush with the wall; and primer over the repair so the paint doesn't flash in a different sheen over the compound. Skip any of those and you'll see the repair every time the light changes.
Because we paint as well as finish drywall, we see the whole result. A patch that looks fine unpainted but shows under eggshell is our problem to fix, not something to argue about with a separate painter.
Finish levels, plainly
Drywall finish is graded from Level 0 to Level 5. Level 4 is the standard for painted walls: joints taped and coated, fasteners covered, sanded smooth. Level 5 adds a skim coat over the entire wall so there is no difference in texture between the paper face of the board and the finished joints. It costs more and takes longer, and it's worth it under semi-gloss paint, in rooms with big windows or long hallways lit from one end, and anywhere a perfectly flat wall is the goal. We'll tell you which level your project calls for and why.
Ceiling drywall repair
Ceilings are the hardest drywall surface to get right and one of the most common places for damage: a brown stain under a bathroom, a seam that has started to sag, a crack running along a joint, tape that has let go, or a hole left behind after plumbing or electrical work. Light from windows and fixtures hits a ceiling at a low angle, so every ridge and dip shows.
We cut back to sound board, fasten new drywall to the joists, and replace anything soft or sagging instead of skimming over it. Seams are taped and finished wide so there is no hump, then the repair is primed. On a textured ceiling we match the texture. On a smooth ceiling we normally paint the whole ceiling, corner to corner, because a patch painted on its own almost always reads as a different shade. That is where doing both the drywall and the interior painting pays off.
Water damage: fix the cause first
Replacing a stained ceiling under a leak that hasn't been fixed is a waste of your money. Before we repair water-damaged drywall we'll ask about the source, roof, pipe, tub or window, and make sure it's resolved. Then we open the damaged area, check the framing and insulation, let everything dry, and install new board. A stain-blocking primer goes on before paint so the old water mark never shows again.
Older plaster walls
Many Baltimore homes have plaster over lath rather than drywall. Plaster can often be repaired, but when it's badly cracked, loose or crumbling, a skim coat or new drywall over the existing wall may be the more durable fix. We'll look at what you have and give you the honest options on the estimate.

Drywall questions
Can you repair drywall and then paint it?
Yes, and it's the best way to do it. We cut out the damage, patch or replace the board, tape, apply compound in thin coats, sand, prime and paint. Because the same people handle both, the patch gets feathered and primed properly instead of being painted over a rough spot.
What are drywall finish levels?
Finish levels run from 0 to 5 and describe how smooth the surface is. Level 4 is the normal finish for walls that will be painted with a flat or eggshell paint. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the entire surface and is used under glossy paint or in rooms with strong raking light where every ripple would show. We'll recommend the level that fits your paint and your lighting.
Can you match an existing wall texture?
Yes. Orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel and other textures can be matched so the repair blends with the rest of the wall or ceiling. Matching takes test patches and patience, and we build that into the job.
How do you handle water-damaged drywall?
The source of the water has to be fixed first. Then we remove the damaged section, check for mold or wet framing, let it dry, install new board, finish and prime with a stain-blocking primer so the stain doesn't bleed through the new paint.
How long does a drywall repair take?
Small patches can be done in a day or two, with drying time between coats of compound. Larger repairs, ceilings and full-room installs take longer because each coat has to dry before the next. Your estimate includes the schedule.
How much does drywall repair cost in Baltimore?
It depends on the size of the damage, whether it's on a wall or a ceiling, whether the board can be patched or has to be replaced, the texture to match, and whether we paint just the repair or the whole wall or ceiling. A doorknob hole and a water-damaged ceiling are very different jobs. Text a photo to (443) 500-9924 for a first read, and we'll confirm a written price once we've seen it in person.
Can you repair a water-stained or sagging ceiling?
Yes. Once the leak is fixed, we cut out the stained or soft board, check the framing above it, install new drywall fastened to the joists, tape and finish the seams wide, and seal the area with a stain-blocking primer. Then the ceiling is painted corner to corner so the repair doesn't show as a different shade.
Is drywall work messy?
Sanding compound makes fine dust. We seal off the work area, cover floors and furniture, control dust while sanding and clean up every day. You'll know we were there by the finished wall, not by the dust.
Do you install new drywall for basements and additions?
Yes. Hanging, taping, finishing and priming new drywall for finished basements, additions, new partition walls and ceilings. Ready for paint or finished with paint by us.
